The Road to 40: Week 7 update (Happy Masters week!)

Happy Friday—and happy Masters week! One of the best weeks in golf. I caught some of the Par 3 Contest, and while ESPN certainly tried to “enhance” the experience… let’s just say it missed the mark. The Masters is special because of its tradition and history. It doesn’t need extras—just more moments with the players and their families. And definitely more Frankie Fleetwood. I’m already looking forward to the day he clears the water on the ninth hole of the Par 3 course.
Now, back to my week.
I went into this week with a plan, but after reflecting on where my mindset was at the end of last week, I knew that had to take priority. I really leaned into positive affirmations and made a conscious effort to focus on what’s going well in my game. That shift made a noticeable difference. My practice sessions over the weekend were both more enjoyable and more productive. I’ve been especially focused on maintaining balance throughout my swing, and I can tell my ball striking is improving.
I headed to the range on Monday and liked what I was seeing. A few shots leaked out to the right, but overall, the swing feels solid—and I’m finally starting to see the results I’ve been working toward.
Tuesday night league was an adventure. The desert winds were no joke, and it definitely showed on the scorecard—seven over par. Even so, I didn’t feel like I played poorly. The biggest challenge was judging the wind on the par threes. I hit several shots exactly as I wanted, only to watch the wind take over. My putting didn’t help matters either—19 putts in nine holes will do that. Still, I was proud of how I managed my composure and walked away from the round feeling okay about where things stand.
By Wednesday, I started feeling the physical toll of the past couple of months—between workouts and intense practice sessions. I woke up with a pretty significant crick in my neck that extended down into my left shoulder, to the point where I could barely turn my head. The pain lingered into Thursday, and it was clear I needed to take it easy. So, the only golf happening in my house the past couple of days has been The Masters.
I’m feeling a bit better today, so I may try to get out and do some light chipping and putting. We’ll see how it goes.
That’s all for this week. I hope you enjoy what’s shaping up to be a fantastic Masters weekend.
Until next week.
Fairways and greens, y’all.
