I'm back. Ok…you may not care that I'm back (those details in a later post) but, Scottie's back. Rory's back. Let's get the PGA Tour season officially started.
With the backdrop of one of the most beautiful and treacherous golf courses in golf, we saw the return of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to the PGA tour.
Round 1 saw very light winds and gettable hole locations (at both Pebble and Spyglass Hill) to see people go low. Russel Henley was the 18 hold leader with an 8-under 64. Scottie returned with a 5-under 67 and Rory's return saw him shoot a 6-under 66 with some fireworks on the 15th at Spyglass…his second hole-in-one on tour that found the cup on the fly. Just putting this here for now…Justin Rose, 2023 champion, make a hole-in-one on the 15th at Spyglass and ending up lifting the trophy that Sunday.
Round 2 saw Sepp Straka fired a 7-under 65 and vault into the lead at 14-under after two rounds. In a tie for second was the first round leader Russel Henley and Australian, Cam Davis at 11-under.
Round 3 brought was Pebble is known for - the weather. The winds definitely kicked up and shuffled the leaderboard quite a bit. Sepp Straka was still the leader after Saturday's round, but his 2-under round of 70 saw his lead shrink to just 1, with Rory and fellow Northern Irishman, Shane Lowry, vault into a tie for second at 15-under.
Round four was set to be a battle of European Ryder Cup teammates, with Straka, Rory and Lowry teeing it up in the final group. Sepp Straka struggled for most of the day and shot an even par 72 to finish in a tie for 7th. Lowry struggled on the front nine, going out in 1-over but turned things around on the back nine, shooting 5 under coming home to finish in 2nd place, with a total of 19-under par. Rory played almost perfect golf on Sunday (only 1 bogey on the card) to shoot a 6-under 66 and finish with the second best score to par in tournament history, 21-under.
This marks Rory's first win of 2025 and his first win at Pebble Beach. A lot has been said about Rory's performance at the "historic" golf courses and he definitely stepped up and silenced the critics…for now. Could this be his year to end the major championship drought? His swing definitely looks like he could make it happen but, we'll have to wait 2 months to see.
Next tournament up: WM Phoenix Open, February 6-9
